6 Months

Winston had his six month check up today. 85% at 27 and 3/4 inches. 68% weight  at 18 lbs 13.5oz. 63% head circumference at 44.5cm. He giggled through the entire appointment except for the shots of course. Even then he only cried for a few seconds. Such a good boy;)

Popcorn Balls!

This was a favorite family treat of ours when we were little. Mom even made these as Halloween giveaways one year. We are holding Veda's 4th birthday party on a Cat and the Hat themed train ride so I'm experimenting with birthday treats that will be easier to eat than gooey cake.

Round 3

Adele stopped breathing and passed out AGAIN. She stuck her hand in the fence and the dog bit her... pretty hard (this is an old photo - not the scene of the crime). Of course it was her fault but she was so scared she just couldn't breath. I blew in her face over and over but she just couldn't snap out of it so her eyes rolled back and there she went. Todd came out and pounded on her back until she started crying again. I think the neighbor must think I'm nuts - I'm sure they think I was screaming because the dog bit her and they are probably wondering if I'm going to slap a lawsuit on them;) However I will consider this a learning opportunitiy - for both of us.

Winston's new BFF

Team USA!

Veda and Adele's classes held their own Olympics this past week in celebration of the London games. I had Veda wear sweat bands on both her head and arms. She was convinced this made her an official athlete. Now she won't take it off and she calls it her "sweating bar". Veda won a medal for "touching Miss Meghan's hand first at the end of the race" and Adele won a ribbon for "I kick a ball at school".

Four years ago we were watching the games in China and awaiting the arrival of Miss Veda. The night before she was born we stayed up until midnight watching Michael Phelps swim for the gold. Two hours later my water broke. I was thinking about this last night when we couldn't quit watching even though we knew the kids would have us up at the break of dawn. So far Veda says that the swimming is her favorite - she was a big fan of the opening ceremonies as well and all the kids jumping on the beds.

Adele and Veda went to battle this morning and Veda won. Adele came running upstairs to show us her battle wound. Veda had bitten her through the skin right above her right breast.

Todd: "Veda you almost took off her nipple"

Veda: "Is nipple Spanish for boobies?"

Todd: "No"

Veda: "I wonder what that word is? Is it Espinado?"

We Have a Crawler

Time to put away small objects and reinstall the baby gates. Now is when the real work begins... keeping this one safe as he gets in to EVERYTHING. He is a pretty big fan of the toy room. Given it's never picked up there are new discoveries at every turn.

Discovering Veda

I just can not tell you enough how much I love Veda's school. More importantly, Veda LOVES her school. So much so that when she woke up this morning and found out it wasn't a school day she begged and begged for me to take her anyway. So I called and asked if I could pay for an extra day this week and off we went.

Everyday we get a summary email of the day's activities in the classroon and once a week they send a journal home with Veda with an update of her personal experiences. The journal is used for back and forth communication between the parents and teachers about the childrens' progress.

Here is today's entry from Ms. Meghan

We had an awesome week in Art Studio! Veda loved water day and getting to use a slip&slide! On Wednesday she helped us make "Power-Bars" with marshmellows and Fruity Pebbles. They were very colorful and tasted great!

Today we had a great field trip to Horsefeather farm! Veda was so excited and seemed amazed by everything! She got to see wallabies, including an albino wallaby, horses, donkeys, a minature deer, and swans! I think Veda's favorite part of the trip was searching for fossils. Each friend could take home one small fossil. Veda found so many and if she was allowed she would have taken them all (she would have taken the creek too)! The last activity at the farm Veda was introduced to Native American artifacts. She was one of a few friends still paying attention after the long day. She was excited to feel the different stones and rocks that they used as tools. Veda slso liked crushing the corn with a big stone! Veda did a great job listening on our triup and enjoyed it all.

Things that make me want to scream...

Apple juice and string cheese "soup" in the cup holders of my newly cleaned car.

Happy Messy Eater

His mouth is always a moving target. Distracted by everything, it's a serious chore to feed this kid!

Escape Artist

Since Adele is still in diapers, she never gets to go inside to the Rest Stops/Truck Stops to go potty on our long drives back to Iowa (lucky her).  Instead, she takes the opportunity to escape from her car seat and sit up front by me.  She always thinks she's really smart and pulling a fast one on us.  This picture couldn't describe her personality any better...

Sunday Brunch

Our last visit to Clear Lake was capped off with a great brunch at The Landing.  We recently added a made to order pasta station, which was a huge hit, as Veda and Adele love their NooNos.

Curious George Train Ride

Last weekend we went up to Lebanon to take the kids on the Curious George train ride, with our friends Steve & Jen, and their kids Jack and Sydney.  Both Veda & Adele had a great time on the train, sitting in the old fashioned seats and then also getting to ride outside in the cargo portion of the train.  To top it off, they got their picture taken with (the cute & cuddly) Curious George and (the creepy knock-off) Man in the Yellow Hat.

Practice Birthday Party

Veda was practicing her birthday party planning today with Roady Pony.  Won't be long and she will get to have her own party...

Veda and Adele had a 4th of July parade at school a few weeks back. It was miserably hot but the teachers put on a good show and we survived about 15 minutes of fun. Veda didn't seem to mind the heat and was just super excited to show off her decorations and her new kitty helmet.

Growing up with Sisters

The girls are finding that they have the power to make Winston laugh. He loved being buried in dress-up clothes.... until it got out of hand and Adele started to toss toys at him. No unsupervised play with brother just yet.

Hudson Gary Ehlers

It's a big day! Owen got himself a little brother and Auntie Kel got a long night of hee and haws. Hudson was born at 8:10am weighing in at a whopping 8 lbs 10oz and measuring 22.5 inches long. Today was Kel's due date so I'm guessing that Hudson is going to be really good at following directions. The report from the hospital is that he's a good eater and he's pretty chill. So far he's got a flawless report card. We just can't wait to meet him. Congratulations Kel and Chris - Party of FOUR!

Happy Birthday Nana!

Happy Happy Birthday Nana (aka Nanny and Nonnie). We Love you! What a great birthday breakfast at Bluebird Cafe.

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Veda and I were playing kitchen yesterday. She started our meal off with a prayer. "Dear Jesus... repeat after me Mom... Dear Jesus, We love you and bow to you for giving us a kitchen and lots of other stuff." Later in the evening Dad joined our dinner party so we had another prayer. "Dear Jesus, we love you, we sew to knit and we mix things for you. Amen."

A week with Nana

My Mom came back to Ohio with us after our vacation in Iowa. I had meetings in Columbus and our babysitter was on vacation so Mom got to spend some good one on one time with Winston and of course the girls loved having her around. She even cleaned and bought me new plants because mine were dying;( Now I have to keep them alive out of guilt. Thanks for making the solo drive to help us!

More Uthof Family Fun

Max Capacity. A sure target for the DNR but they left us alone.
Looking back on this photo I can't believe I turned my back on Adele with an open flame.
Tug of War with the tie up rope;)

S'mores with the Uthofs

We hosted the first Uthof summer family reuion at the lake a few weeks ago. There are now 12 grandchildren and another 2 soon to arrive. We had a pizza party Friday night and family pictures and a pot luck on Saturday. Gary gave 22 of us a pontoon ride (the max that thing can hold) and we also got some adult time at the Landing. Veda and her second cousin Emma REALLY hit it off and she can't wait to see her agian. I didn't get a picture but Veda also got her first jet ski ride from Uncle Evan.

Jesus is Alive!

Veda went to vacation bible school when we were up at the Lake for the week. She had SO much fun. On the first day she came running down the stairs to meet me and yelled, "Mom guess what, Jesus is ALIVE." On the second day she told me that Jesus was in her heart. On the third day she belted into song. I would say this was well worth the $10 registration fee and daily offering (which Veda referred to as "the paying thing".) On the last day she brought home all of her art projects for the week including this stepping stone. I was a little curious when she told me after the first day that she had been pushing marbles in "mud".

A few more Father's Day pics

When I Grow Up

Adele was begging to have her hair cut after watching Didi cut Dad's hair. She's such a copycat these days.
